Sashiko thread, used in sashiko embroidery and popular with menders, is a strong, smooth, cotton thread that’s perfect for mending denim. The strands are twisted together and not meant to be separated.
Rainbow sashiko thread is the unicorn of the bunch. Whenever I use this thread in class for demos, magic twinkles appear in students’ eyes, they stop listening to me and start asking about the thread.

The cheery colours and short colour changes add a fun surprise element to visible-mending projects. I don’t often use sashiko thread for darning, but I like using this thread to darn cotton athletic socks, to make it seem fun (in a Mary Poppins kind of way).
This thread makes a great gift – particularly for new menders and kids and anyone who needs more mending motivation.
Each skein is 40m long. All skeins pictured here are the same rainbow colourway.
NOTE: to avoid tangles, pre-cut and plait/braid sashiko thread before you use it.
