Darning plaits feature multiple colours of mending wool, braided together in a convenient, delightful bundle.
Once mending-kit staples, they are now rare treasures. (If I had a dollar for every time I heard a mender wistfully mention vintage darning plaits, I could retire now.)
These vintage darning plaits were plucked from a time machine, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Each plait features 17 colours, with up to 7 strands / 4-5 metres of each colour (only a few strands appear to be missing).
Made in Italy (a long time ago) from 100% wool, packaged in a clear vinyl sleeve. The sleeves have had some (mis)adventures but the mending yarn is in great condition.
Want to see how it’s done? Modern Mending the book includes 32 pages of darning instructions, with photographs and illustrated diagrams.
