Learn how to mend your clothes

My book Modern Mending has 272 pages of mending instructions and inspiration, with step-by-step photos and diagrams. I also sell other authors' mending books that I think offer something special and different to what's in my book.

Prefer to learn from a person rather than a book? I love teaching mending workshops in person and online. Subscribe to my mailing list to hear about new workshops first.

Online workshops are temporarily paused (you'll see them marked SOLD OUT below), but I'm hoping to start them up again soon. Email me at elf@modernmending.com if you'd like to request an online workshop topic, or use the chat window.

You can also email me if you'd like me to teach a mending workshop for your organisation.
I'll send you my workshop and event guide with all the details.

Upcoming in-person workshops

BACK-TO-BACK EVENTS AT CROYDON LIBRARY IN OCTOBER:
The Hole Story - Honeycomb Darning workshop
3pm, 21 October 2026
In this workshop you’ll learn how to use blanket stitch as the building block for honeycomb darning. It's ideal for threadbare socks and other items, but can be used to repair holes as well, in both knit and woven fabrics.
Bookings here.

Meet the Mender: Group Therapy
5.30pm, 21 October 2026
Do you have clothes with stains, holes or rips and don’t know how to fix them? Join the crowd!
Bring a worn-out garment to Croydon Library for this fun event, and watch mending expert Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald, author of the book Modern Mending, dish out mending advice that everyone can learn from.
You'll get personalised recommendations for techniques and tools to help bring your clothes back to life, and hear stories of the very special things in everyone else's mending piles.
Bookings are essential and limited to one garment assessment per person, but additional garments may be featured if time allows.
If you don't have clothes that need mending (lucky you!), you're welcome to watch and learn.
Mending books and supplies will be available for purchase on the night.
Bookings here.
